PTA ALIGNMENT

PTSA Resolutions

The Shorewood High School PTSA aligns itself with the WA State PTA’s resolutions on several topics.

ANTI-RACISM

2.26 Dismantling Institutional and Systemic Racism

2.25 Restorative Justice and Improving Student Outcomes

In support of these resolutions this PTSA has enacted these practices during the 20-21 school year:

  • Creation of a Racial Equity group that met monthly to discuss anti-racism training, actions that can be taken to support Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and their families, and white supremacist structures within our school, district and PTSA.

  • Funds directed to the Shorewood Family Advocate to support families in need.

  • Student club grants that focus on BIPOC concerns and communities.

    • The Shorewood PTSA has partially funded Black Student Graduation and the Shoreline PTA Council covered the rest.

    • We also funded the Latinx club community building activity of getting t-shirts for each of their club members.

    • Both Science Olympiad club and the Robotics club requested grants to help cover their competitions and to ensure that every student who wanted to, could be involved.

  • Staff grants focused on furthering the education of our students furthest from educational justice.

    • Several subscriptions to Kami - a software that increases access for all students to do schoolwork over their school Chromebooks.  Many students do not have printers or phones so full access to completing all parts of homework over their Chromebooks is essential.

    • SEL software to enhance and further the school’s curriculum.

    • Other internet programs that help teachers reach every student.

SCHOOL RESPONSE TO SEXUAL ASSAULT AND HARASSMENT

2.21 Sexual Violence and Harassment Prevention and Survivor Supports

In light of the sexual assault protest by Shorewood students in early February 2021 and in support of the above resolution, we have enacted these practices:

  • Regular meetings with the students involved in the protest to find out their demands and to let them know that they are being heard by adults in their community.

  • Inquiring into the procedures in place on the district level regarding Title IX and HIB reports of sexual assault and harassment.

  • Researching educational sources for student, family and staff learning in regard to healthy relationships and consent.

  • Furthering women-focused education in the classroom

  • Working with students’ clubs and the ASB to achieve these goals.

SUICIDE PREVENTION

2.13 Youth Suicide Prevention

Several years ago, the Shorewood PTSA helped fund and organize the Forefront Suicide Prevention curriculum for students and families.  This training is still being carried forward.  Information about Forefront can be found here

In addition, the Shorewood PTSA co-sponsored a guest speaker event (“An Evening with JC Pohl”) on March 25, 2021.  He is a motivational speaker who speaks about empowering students and building resiliency. The link to the recording is here.

Some other WA State PTA resolutions that inform our work are:

2.19 LGBTQ+ Inclusion

2.18 Trauma Informed Care

2.17 Child Sex Trafficking

2.11 Promoting the Safety and Well-Being of Children Through Decreased Exposure to Violence
